As Seen @ California Spring Trials — Petunias Part 1
Last year, the National Garden Bureau designated 2014 as the Year of the Petunia. Well it seemed like it was just that during California Spring Trials this year.
Even though the new varieties that were on display during Spring Trials are scheduled to be introduced in 2015, it was the year of the petunia for many of the breeding companies as we saw quite a few new colors, novelties and one new series during our six-day journey.
In this edition of the Culture Connection as well as our next edition, we’ll be showing some of the new colors from the different petunia series that were on display this year. There are many more colors in the pipeline so be sure to get in touch with your suppliers to learn more about the availability of all of the new colors.
Below is just a sampling of some of the petunia introductions we saw during the first three days of the trip. In the next edition of the Culture Connection, we will show you some of the petunia intros from Days 4, 5 and 6. We started our Spring Trials trip on Saturday in Santa Cruz at Proven Winners and by the end of Monday we finished up at the Dümmen Red Fox location at the Edna Valley Winery.
‘Supertunia Black Cherry’ from Proven Winners
‘Saguna Radiant Rose’ from Syngenta Flowers
‘Cascadias Autumn Mystery’ from Danziger “Dan” Flower Farm
‘Success Burgundy’ – the new Success! series from Benary
‘Boom Little Antique Pink’ from Cohen Propagation Nurseries
Hem Genetics ‘Mambo GP Rose Veined’
American Takii’s ‘African Sunset’
‘Blue Star’ from Sakata
‘SuperCal Salmon Glow’ from Sakata
‘Potunia Plus Denim Blue’ from Dümmen Red Fox

Like I mentioned at the top, this is just a few of the petunia colors we saw during the first three days. Stay tuned for more in the next edition of the Culture Connection.
Don’t forget, we have posted a plethora of pix of many of the new introductions as well as some of the displays in our California Spring Trials photo gallery on www.CaliforniaSpringTrials.com.
Be sure to check them out.
