Spring Trials Recap: Gone Antiquing!

As I sit here and rummage through the hundreds of photos my colleagues captured while at the California Spring Trials this year, I’m definitely noticing some trends among all the new introductions.

One trend, in particular, that I’d like to discuss today is this rise in “antique” color introductions. We see the vintage trend popping up everywhere, from home decor to fashion. So why not in the garden as well? There is something very charming about this color trend. These antique-looking plants have a classic yet unique look. They definitely grab your attention, and consumers will eat them up.

Hues of cream, light pink and faded purple are taking over. And they’ll make quite the statement in the garden. Just take a look…

Lantana ‘South Beach Purple Skies’ (Hort Couture)

Petunia ‘Crazytunia Stonewashed’ (Westhoff)

Begonia ‘Glory Lemon’ (Beekenkamp)

Petunia ‘Easy Wave Burgundy Velour’ (PanAmerican Seed)

Ranunculus ‘Sprinkles Pink Bicolour’ (Schoneveld)

Heucherella ‘Honey Rose’ (Terra Nova Nurseries)

Petunia ‘Boom Little Antique Pink’ (Cohen Propagation Nurseries)

What do you think of this new color trend? Are you noticing a demand for these vintage-looking varieties? Will you be adding any of the above to your production next season? Shoot me an e-mail at jdolce@greatamericanpublish.com; I’d love to hear from you.
