Take Me Out to the Ballgame … and the Garden
You can add the San Francisco Giants to the list of gardeners who are jumping into edible gardening.
Last week, the team debuted a 4,320 square-foot garden behind the centerfield scoreboard at AT&T Park that will produce sustainably grown veggies, herbs, fruits and flowers.
The Garden at AT&T Park will be managed by Bon Appetit Management Co., a Palo Alto, Calif.-based company who has been operating a restaurant at the ballpark since 2000.
Designed by Blasen Landscape Architecture and EDG, the garden has raised beds and aquaponic growing towers to grow produce for two new restaurants. Fertilizer for the garden will be provided by coffee grounds from local Peet’s Coffee & Tea stores.
During the second half of this season, the garden will be open during every home game and fans will be able to enjoy the bounty from the garden on the menus at two concession stands the Garden Table and the Hearth Table.
So the next time you are in the Bay area, why not stop in at the ballpark for “research” purposes to check out the gardens … and a ballgame?
