Random Acts of Kindness (and Gardening) By Tim Hodson

Have you heard what members of the Des Moines Founders Garden Club are doing?

They are “planting” random acts of kindness throughout Iowa’s capital city.

According to an article in the Des Moines Register, for the past five years, club members have been engaging in guerrilla gardening techniques. They have been planting seeds and bulbs in the fall so that the public will be surprised in the spring and enjoy their beauty the following year.

Susan Noland, chairman of the club and a member of the Des Moines Park and Recreation board told the Register, “It just pops up like we do.”

Over the weekend, the club planted 9,000 bulbs near a memorial shelter in the city’s Greenwood Park.

I know there are many other organizations out there engaging in guerrilla gardening and doing amazing things for their communities. It’s a great way for the public to see some of our industry’s great products – and how great our industry is. If you know of any groups doing things like this, I’d like to know about them.

Drop me a line at thodson@greatamericanpublish.com and tell me how they are “attacking” the landscape.
