Surviving & Thriving in Orlando By Tim Hodson

Last week, growers from across the country converged on Orlando, Florida, for the eighth annual Big Grower Executive Summit.

The theme for this year’s event was “Surviving & Thriving” as attendees had the opportunity to learn about many of the different business issues that are impacting their companies today and in the coming years.

Our keynote speaker, Curt Steinhorst from the Center for Generational Kinetics, opened the Summit with his presentation on Selling to Millennials that really set the tone for the next two days. He provided attendees with insight into the minds and actions of Gen Y and how our industry will benefit from them in the future.

Costa Farms’ Marta Maria Garcia showed us some of the innovative marketing programs and techniques that Costa is using to sell to today’s consumers while preparing to meet the needs of the next generation of “gardeners.”

Chris Walsh’s presentation on “The Business Side of Marijuana” generated quite a bit of discussion among attendees. He discussed the current state of the cannabis industry in the United States and talked about the business challenges and opportunities the cannabis industry offers. Walsh is the managing editor of Marijuana Business magazine.

Professional Builder magazine’s Denise Dersin provided attendees with a great snapshot of the U.S. housing industry and what we can expect to see this year and in the future. And AmericanHort’s Craig Regelbrugge brought everyone up to date on what is going on in Washington, D.C., as well as the organization’s efforts to keep everyone informed about the honeybee and neonicotinoids issue.

Attendees also heard presentations on how to make the most out of “big data” in their business, dealing with ever-changing fuel prices and their impact on logistics and the latest research from the University of Florida on how consumers react to the different traits of live goods.

We’d like to extend a special “Thank You” to Ty and Randy Strode at Agri-Starts and everyone at Hermann Engelmann Greenhouses in Apopka for their hospitality for the behind-the-scenes tours at both facilities.

Depot to Add 80,000 to Payroll This Spring Armed with New Mobile Technology

Last week, the Home Depot announced it would be hiring more than 80,000 associates for the spring season – its busiest selling season. The company is recruiting for positions both in its stores and distribution facilities. This spring, the company will be equipping associates with new in-store mobile technology, called the FIRST Phone. The company is deploying approximately 40,000 web-enabled devices to help stores expedite checkout through “line-busting,” conduct mobile check-out in the garden center and give associates a simple customer service tool for locating products, checking inventory or explaining product features.

Snow Causes Roof Collapse at Massachusetts Lowe’s Store

The recent record-breaking snowfall in New England caused the collapse of a roof in a garden center at a Lowe’s store in Seekonk, Massachusetts. A water pipe also broke at the store causing even more damage. Fortunately, the store was closed at the time. Seekonk’s fire chief Michael Healy told a local TV station there was a “lot of damage to the actual structure and the products underneath it, there is also water damage inside the store. If [the store] had been open and there were shoppers, we’d be in a much more serious condition than it is right now.”

Wal-Mart Looks for New Ways to Grow in ’15

Wal-Mart plans to scale back its new store investments and increase spending on e-commerce as a way to combat lagging foot traffic in its U.S. stores. The company is looking at strategies to help improve in-store performance while building its e-commerce business. “There is no excuse for us not to be doing better,” said CEO Doug McMillon told investors at a recent meeting. “Every store I go into has room to improve.” According to McMillon, the three areas the retailer is focusing on include : improving the customer experience; beating competitors on price; and expanding the product assortment.
