A Good Year for Mother’s Day By Tim Hodson

As I’m sure you are well aware, Mother’s Day is this Sunday.

It has been 101 years since President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day – and greenhouses, garden centers and floral shops have been hopping ever since.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), Americans will be spending approximately $2.4 billion on flowers for Mom this year.

In April, the National Retail Federation conducted a survey of more than 6,000 consumers and found that Americans plan to spend $21.2 billion on Mom this year. More than 2/3 of the survey respondents said they plan to buy Mom flowers for Mother’s Day!

Overall, Mother’s Day spending is predicted to be up this year, in part, due to lower fuel prices and a stronger economy. On average, Americans will open their wallets and spend about $172 on gifts for Mom in 2015 – a $10 increase over last year and the highest amount ever in the NRF survey’s history.

Mother’s Day weekend serves as the unofficial start to the gardening season. And while the NRF survey does not tell us what types of flowers Mom will be receiving this Sunday, this is a great opportunity to get the 2015 started off right.

The clock is ticking “¦ have you picked out the plants that you will be giving your mother this weekend?
