A New Variety That Rocks! By Tim Hodson

Back in the late 1960s, “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” was a novelty song that became a Top 20 hit.

Well, Paul McCartney might just want to re-record the song because while he was on tour in the Netherlands last week, the former Beatle was presented with a red tulip with white edges christened Tulipa ‘Paul McCartney’.

The tulip is offered by the Remarkable Tulips grower’s association in Lisse, the Netherlands. Jaap Uittenbogaard is the grower who bred the bulb and presented it to McCartney.

McCartney said the bloom’s red color represents love and white represents limitless possibilities. The colors also are similar to those of the soccer team in McCartney’s native Liverpool.

Uittenbogaard has been developing this variety for nearly 20 years. It is expected to be available in very limited quantities in 2016 and for commercial sales within the next three years.

McCartney tweeted a photo of the presentation to his 2.37 million followers on Twitter. Click here to see the Tweet of Paul McCartney and ‘Paul McCartney’.

This new tulip really does rock!
