Spring!?! By Tim Hodson

It’s hard to believe it is already June 1.

Especially since it was only 41 degrees as I drove to the office this morning in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Spring 2015 is flying by and it has not been without its weather challenges for growers and garden centers.

Memorial Day 2015 was earlier than normal this year; there has been unprecedented precipitation in Texas and Oklahoma, unseasonable cold in the Midwest, a heat wave in Alaska, the continued drought in the West and the beginning of the hurricane season; geez, there’s even still snow on the ground in Boston after their brutal and historic winter.

This is how we define spring in 2015!?!

Despite all of these different challenges around the country, spring does seem to be bouncing along at the garden center. I’m still hearing pretty positive reports about spring sales from across the country. Even though the mercury didn’t make it out of the 50s, the two garden centers I drove past yesterday afternoon were hopping. You’ve got to love those hardy Midwestern gardeners.

According to the experts, the weather is supposed to return to “normal” this week for most of the nation, so we’ll just have to wait and see how Spring 2015 turns out – stay tuned!

How’s the weather in your region been so far this year? How has it impacted your sales so far this spring?
