Happy St. Patrick’s Day! By Tim Hodson

Our industry is the original green industry, but on March 17, it seems like every industry breaks out their shamrocks and everyone is a wee bit more green than they are on any other day.

According to the Academic American Encyclopedia, white clover (Trifolium repens) “was the original shamrock of Ireland.”

Back in the day (the fifth century), St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to teach people about Christianity. He used the three leaflets to represent the Holy Trinity: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

While most clovers have three leaflets, it is the more rare four-leaf clover that is considered a universal good luck charm and the symbol of St. Patrick’s Day.

But did you know that back in 2009 a man in Japan discovered a clover with 56 leaflets on one clover stem?!? Check it out, it’s in the Guinness Book of World Records.

I have put together a short list of fun facts about the four-leaf clover. So if you plan on enjoying a pint of Guinness along with some corned beef and cabbage today with some friends, why don’t you impress them with a few four-leaf factoids?

Did you know:

  • No clover reportedly naturally produces four leaves (that’s why four-leaf clovers are so rare and therefore considered lucky);
  • That for every 10,000 three-leaf clovers there is one four-leaf clover;
  • The four “leafs” represent faith, hope, luck and love;
  • Due to mutation, the fourth leaf is often smaller and a different shade than the other three;
  • Abraham Lincoln reportedly always carried a lucky four-leaf clover but forgot it the night he was assassinated while Napoleon Bonaparte escaped an assassination attempt when he bent over to pick up a four-leaf clover!

May the luck of the Irish be with you today and every day!

Happy St. Paddy’s Day!
