Don’t Forget to Remind People By Tim Hodson

Did you know that this week is National Indoor Plant Week?

Each year, the third full week of September is designated to help “increase public awareness of the importance of indoor plants and their many attributes.”

It is an opportunity to remind consumers just how great houseplants are and how they impact our lives.

Participating in National Indoor Plant Week is free and anyone can get involved.

Just a reminder, here are some of the benefits that indoor plants offer: they are personal air cleaners; they help reduce noise and enhance productivity; they create oxygen and remove carbon dioxide; and they create an indoor connection with the outdoors.

Organizers of National Indoor Plant Week are urging greenhouse growers to use available literature and social media channels to educate customers and clients on how indoor plants can help improve our health.

They also suggest mentioning on your marquee about inviting customers in to your retail operation to purchase indoor plants for their homes and help everyone Celebrate National Indoor Plant Week!

Another suggestion is to create a display with the top 10 plants that remove volatile chemicals from the air or, if you can’t create an actual display, create a list with photos and post it on your website and other social media pages.

Justin Hancock at Costa Farms and a member of this year’s class of GPN’s 40 Under 40 recently blogged about some of the other benefits that indoor plants have to offer.

Hancock says that not only are houseplants very versatile when it comes to indoor décor but they also offer many other health benefits in addition to those mentioned above.

One of the things that Hancock mentions in his blog is that plants help people as they age — and isn’t that something we all could use? “Keeping plants healthy … helps make us more socially connected and happy,” as we get older, he writes. You can read his blog here.
