MSU, AmericanHort to Offer One-Day Greenhouse Lighting Program
Next month, Michigan State University and AmericanHort will present a one-day program on Lighting Solutions to provide growers with the latest information on greenhouse lighting.
MSU researchers Erik Runkle and Roberto Lopez will lead the seminar and discuss the current research taking place at MSU to help educate growers on how to make informed decisions on greenhouse and indoor lighting technologies.
Runkle writes the Technically Speaking column in each issue of GPN and Lopez is a regular contributor to the pages of the magazine as well.
The workshop will take place Feb. 3, at MSU’s Plant & Soil Sciences Building in East Lansing, Michigan.
During the program, Runkle and Lopez will share their wealth of knowledge and research on lighting technology and break it down into business-relatable terms.
Their goal is to provide growers with a better understanding of the technologies and how to invest in the greenhouse and indoor lighting that make the most sense for their business.
Some of the topics that Runkle and Lopez and their colleagues will cover include:
- Effective strategies in photoperiodic greenhouse lighting to regulate flowering (emphasis on LEDs).
- Effects of the light spectrum on young plant development.
- Benefits of high-intensity lighting and key considerations for install, operation and effectiveness.
- Investment considerations when installing LED lighting and whether it’s right for you.
Attendees also will have an opportunity to tour the MSU research greenhouses during the day to see some of the university’s lighting research projects.
The registration cost for the seminar is $75 and includes lunch and the greenhouse tour.

Lighting Solutions is part of AmericanHort’s University education series.
