A Month to Grow On By Tim Hodson

April is National Garden Month!

On April 18, 1986, former President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation declaring April 12 to 18, as the first-ever National Garden Week. Back then, the National Garden Bureau worked with 23 co-sponsoring national horticultural organizations to get the proclamation enacted.

In 2002, the National Gardening Association (NGA) began lobbying to turn that one week into the entire month of April and that’s exactly what happened in 2003. Ever since then, the fourth month of the year is officially National Garden Month.

“When you garden, you grow,” the NGA declares. That is why “every April communities, organizations and individuals nationwide celebrate gardening during National Garden Month. Gardeners know, and research confirms, that nurturing plants is good for us: attitudes toward health and nutrition improve, kids perform better at school and community spirit grows. Join the celebration and help to make America a greener, healthier, more livable place!”

Does your company promote National Garden Month? If you don’t, you should. It’s good for your community and it’s also good for business.

Even though the month is already half over (time sure flies in the spring, doesn’t it?), you can still promote your business as an active participant in National Garden Month.

The National Gardening Association has created a website that is full of information to help you get involved. It contains different gardening-related activities that children can participate in as well as articles and ideas for the novice gardener all the way up to the expert. The NGA will be updating the site throughout the month to help promote gardening.

You can even download the National Garden Month logo to use for your own promotional purposes and inform your customers.

As spring really gets into full swing, this is a great opportunity to get on your soapbox and promote your products and get involved in your community.

It’s a great month to grow on!
