An Ounce of Prevention By Tim Hodson

Do you and your staff have a good understanding of plant growth regulators and how you can use them effectively in your greenhouse?

Would you like to expand your knowledge of PGRs and prevent some of the common mistakes that many growers make?

On Nov. 28, GPN will be presenting a free, one-hour webinar on“Common Mistakes in Using PGRs and How to Prevent Them.” Roger Styer of Styer’s Horticultural Consulting is our presenter. The webinar will take place at 2 p.m. EST.

Controlling the growth of ornamentals with PGRs can be a challenge for any grower — big or small. Ask any grower, and I think they will all agree, successfully working with growth regulators is both a science and an art. That’s why we have asked Roger to tackle this topic in November.

Knowing the vigor of the varieties grown, spacing requirements, hanging baskets over crops in the greenhouse, time of year and method of application all affect how well your growth control program will be.

Styer will cover some of the key mistakes growing plugs, liners and finished plants that he sees when working with greenhouse growers around the country.  He also will discuss how to control growth of combinations, how to do drenches properly and how to overcome overdoses of chemical growth regulators.

This webinar will go beyond the basics and into more advanced techniques of using plant growth regulators successfully.

Continue to Expand Your Education

This will be the third webinar that GPN is offering this fall. In September, Styer presented a webinar on “Disease Management: Helping Growers Identify, Correct and Prevent Common Disease Problems.”

If you missed his original presentation, you can still access the archived version for free by clicking here.

And don’t forget, later this week Neil Mattson at Cornell University will be presenting another free, one-hour webinar on “Understanding the Principles of Controlled Environment Agriculture.”

During this webinar, Mattson will discuss the range of technologies that currently are being used in CEA, which crops are most commonly grown and the most common hydroponic growing systems. He also will address some of the different market trends and considerations when starting a new CEA operation.

It will take place this Thursday (Oct. 26) at 2 p.m. EDT.
