Seeking Superstar Students By Tim Hodson

Did you have a stellar student participate in your internship program this year? Do you know an outstanding student that participated in an internship program at another company?
If you answered "yes" to either of those questions, we want to meet that student because he or she could be a candidate for the GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year scholarship.

Now in its 14th year, the GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year scholarship program recognizes the industry's future all-stars. We want to find those students whose internship experience helped changed their outlook on horticulture — in the classroom and in the greenhouse. Check out the Intern of the Year page on our website (www.gpnmag.com/intern-of-the-year) to get an idea of what some of the past recipients have done.

The Scholarship Requirements

The GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year will receive a check for $3,000; travel and lodging to 2013 OFA Short Course in Columbus next July; a full registration to Short Course compliments of OFA; and a feature article about him or her in the January 2013 issue of GPN.

To be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must be enrolled in a four-year accredited university during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic years; be working on a floriculture-related undergraduate degree; and have completed a greenhouse internship in 2012.

Students that meet this criteria then need to prepare:
• A cover letter stating what university the student is attending and request consideration for the scholarship
• A letter of recommendation on university letterhead from the applicant's academic advisor
• A minimum 1,000-word essay describing the internship experience including who the applicant interned for, what his or her responsibilities were and what was learned during the internship.

Send the materials to: GPN/Nexus Intern Scholarship; c/o Tim Hodson Ð GPN; 3030 W. Salt Creek Lane, Suite 201; Arlington Heights, IL 60005.

The deadline to apply for the 2013 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year program is Oct. 22, 2012.
