  • Verbena

Available in 10 colors, the Empress series is uniform in bloom time and habit. Varieties in this series feature large individual flower heads. Empress verbena are bred to tolerate heat as well as mildew and water stress.

Use a rooting medium with a well-aerated soil structure. After sticking, water the cuttings uniformly well for a good “soil to stem” connection. Temperatures should be maintained at 65-75° F day and night. To enhance and promote uniform root development, apply bottom heat at 72-75° F. Mist for four to six days as needed and until roots begin to push into medium. Excessive misting can result in disease and leaching of nutrients. Maintain light levels at 1,000-2,000 foot-candles during rooting. After cuttings have established roots, increase light levels to 2,500-4,500 foot-candles.

Before transplanting, water rooted cuttings well and moisten finish container medium. Alternate liquid feed of 200- to 300-ppm 15-0-15 and 20-10-20. Leach regularly to maintain an EC of 1.5-2.0. Grow at 65-75° F during the day and 60-65° F at night. Increase light levels to 5,000-6,000 foot-candles. A hard pinch (above the fourth or fifth set of leaves) once plant roots reach the edge of the container will promote basal branching.

B-Nine (daminozide) can be used to reduce plant stretch. Verbena also responds to negative DIF.

    Angelonia

The AngelMist series is bred to withstand heat and humidity. Its vigor offers stress tolerance in extreme conditions. AngelMist angelonia are bred to attract butterflies with their bold colors and scented foliage. Blooming from late spring through summer, these varieties reach approximately 4-6 inches tall and spread 12-14 inches.

During propagation, choose a well-drained medium with an EC of 0.75-0.80 and a pH of 5.5-5.8. Soil temperature should be maintained at 68-74° F until roots are visible. To encourage branching and reduce stem stretch, AngelMist angelonia should be propagated under as high a light as possible. Begin fertilization with 75- to 100-ppm nitrogen when roots become visible. Increase to 150- to 200-ppm nitrogen as roots develop.

Growing on, use a light, well-drained soil-less medium with a pH of 5.5-6.2. Maintain temperature at 75-85° F days and 62-70° F nights. Keep light levels as high as possible. The ideal range is 6,000-10,000 foot-candles. Use constant feed at 150-200 ppm, with additional iron as needed.

A single pinch is recommended when growing AngelMist varieties in 41/2- to 5-inch containers. The first pinch should be five to seven days after transplanting. Growers may pinch plants in larger, 5- to 8-inch containers a second time (14 to 21 days after the first pinch) to enhance branching and the number of flower spikes.
