A new series of dwarf pokers, Popsicle sports a compact habit and high-impact colors. Attractive grassy foliage looks great all season, and flowers bloom from summer to fall. Bred for smaller spaces and long bloom time, they may be used as a color spot in mixed beds, mass or for an upright accent. Popsicle kniphofia has large showy flowers and grows and flowers very quickly.
Four colors are currently available. ‘Papaya Popsicle’ has spikes of flowers the color of ripe papayas. It grows 18 inces wide and 12 inches tall; flower spikes grow up to 20 inches. ‘Pineapple Popsicle’ produces cream to yellow spikes. It grows 25 inches wide and 14 inches tall; flower spikes grow up to 26 inches.
All varieties are drought tolerant and prefer full sun. They require a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Dry moderately between waterings. Finish time in a 4-inch container is four to six weeks.
