Cash RewardSource: GPN

Do you know a student who just completed an internship and deserves a cash reward? For the last six years, the GPNNexus Corporation Internship Scholarship program has been in existence to give a reward to a worthy floriculture student. As in the past, the winner – chosen by a panel of industry experts – will receive a check for $3,000, their photo on the cover of the January issue of GPN and an article about them in the same issue.

We’ve made an exciting addition to this year’s program; the winner of the 7th annual GPN Nexus Intern Scholarship will receive an expense-paid trip to the OFA Short Course, July 8-11, 2006 – where their achievement will be publicly recognized – and a 4-day Short Course registration, compliments of OFA – a beneficial experience for anyone in our industry.

As you may have seen on the January 2005 cover of GPN ,the most recent winner of the GPN Nexus Intern Of the Year scholarship was Jessica Boldt from University of Florida, also a recipient of the Vic & Margaret Ball Internship from the American Floral Endowment (AFE). Boldt was able to describe her internship – a six-month stint at White’s Nursery & Greenhouse, Chesapeake, Va. – in a very clear and engaging way, which helped but was not the reason she won. White’s enabled Boldt to perform many tasks rather than just one, and she took advantage of it, initializing responsibility and going full-force into her tasks. This allowed Boldt to learn about the industry and decide what best fit her professional desires.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Enrolled in a 4-year accredited university during 2004-2005 and 2005-2006.
  • Working on an undergraduate degree in floriculture.
  • Completed a greenhouse internship in 2005.

If all requirements are met, applicants should send the following to the address below:

  • A cover letter stating what university they attend and requesting consideration for the scholarship.
  • A letter of recommendation on university letterhead from their academic advisor.
  • A minimum 1,000-word essay describing the intern experience, including who they interned for, what their responsibilities were and what they learned.

Essays will be judged by a panel of industry experts on the quality of the experience, knowledge gained and the ability to describe the experience.
