Ronald “Ronnie” T. German, a leading seedsmen and a key player and industry leader in bedding plant growth during the 60s, 70s and 80s has passed away.

Ronnie was a judge for All American Selections and conducted extensive bedding plant trials of his own. His work led to the success of several significant product lines including Sun & Shade impatiens and Cascade Beauty impatiens, which were developed with his close friend Claude Hope. Research and knowledge by Ronnie German provided the basis for the development of the Garden Leader Brand marketed exclusively by Grimes Seeds and Plants.

Ronnie took over his family’s seed business in 1943 after it was started by his father Harry in 1925. He received the Distinguished Service Award from Michigan State University in recognition as a world-renowned horticulturist and seedsman. He was also an avid outdoorsman, hunter, trapper and fisherman.

In 1934 Ronnie married Patricia Sample, who preceded him in death in 1987 and in 1989 he married Florence “Flossie” Acker, who survives. Ronnie died January 4, 2004 in Smethport, Pa.
