The Horticultural Research Institute awarded four scholarships last week. Winners were announced for the Spring Meadow, Usrey Family, Carville M. Akehurst Memorial and Bigelow scholarships.

Linda Justin, a junior at the University of Rhode Island, received the Timothy Bigelow and Palmer W. Bigelow, Jr. Scholarship of $2,500. She is majoring in environmental horticulture. The Bigelow Scholarship, created in 1988 by the Palmer W. Bigelow family of Bigelow Nurseries, Northboro, Mass., aids students in New England who are pursuing a career in horticulture.

The 2006 Spring Meadow Scholarship of $2,000 was awarded to Skyler Westergard, a Brigham Young University student majoring in horticulture with an emphasis on landscape design/build. Established in 1999, the Spring Meadow Scholarship Fund is dedicated to helping students nationwide obtain a horticulture degree.

Susan Malisch was the recipient of the $2,000 Usrey Family scholarship. A senior at Cal Poly State University, Malisch is majoring in environmental horticulture science and minoring in soil science. This scholarship is awarded each year to horticulture students enrolled in a California state university or college.

This year’s Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship award winner is Hannah Braycki, a junior majoring in landscape horticulture at Unity College. The $2,000 Akehurst Memorial Scholarship, established in 2002 by HRI and the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show (MANTS), memorializes Akehurst, one of the founders of MANTS.
