HRI Awards Three Scholarships
The Horticultural Research Institute, the research affiliate of ANLA, awards the 2010 Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarships and the Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow, Jr. Scholarship to deserving students.
ANLA’s research affiliate Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) has awarded the 2010 Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarships in the sum of $1,000 each to Lucy Wang and Julia Kriz. Amanda Lilly, a second-year graduate student at City College of New York, was recently awarded the 2010 Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow, Jr. Scholarship – a $2,000 scholarship in support of her Master of Science in Landscape Architecture.
The Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 by HRI and the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show (MANTS) to memorialize Mr. Carville M. Akehurst who served the horticultural industry as one of the founders of MANTS.
Lucy Wang is a junior at the University of Maryland majoring in landscape architecture. Wang shared her gratitude upon learning she had received the scholarship, “I am very honored to be a recipient of the Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship for 2010 and will continue to work hard to contribute to a more sustainable and green future.”
Julia Kriz is a graduate student at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She is studying for her Master of Science in Landscape Design. Kriz graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA where she completed her Bachelor of Art in Government with a minor in Environmental Studies. Kriz noted that “Landscape Design combines my first love of plants with my other interests and talents in art, engineering, architecture and ecology. The more I study it, the more I realize what a perfect fit it is.”
The Bigelow Scholarship was created in 1988 by the Palmer W. Bigelow family of Bigelow Nurseries in Northboro, Mass., to aid students from New England who seek a career in horticulture. The scholarship is dedicated to one of the family’s children, the late Timothy Bigelow, and to Palmer W. ‘Bill’ Bigelow, who died in 1997.
Lilly addressing her interest in her chosen field noted, “My undergraduate degree is in architecture. However, while I was in school, and during my years working with a professional architecture firm, I realized that my design interests were most focused in creating outdoor spaces. This drive and determination to design beautiful and ecological green spaces, coupled with a passionate commitment to the environment as our species continues to develop on the land, led me to ultimately pursue the rewarding and challenging profession of Landscape Architecture.”
