Install security measures to deter thieves

{Sponsored} While there can be unpredictable situations when it comes to keeping your business safe, theft is one situation you can prepare for.

There are several types of security options available, each featuring technology that may be just right for you and your business.

Surveillance cameras are a popular method of theft prevention. Hortica® outlines what you should take into consideration if you are thinking about adding cameras to your set of security measures.

Capabilities. Security cameras are available in various shapes and sizes, with a wide range of lenses and features. The most commonly used types of cameras include bullet, dome and pan-tilt-zoom cameras. Determine potential locations for a camera system and decide when you plan to use it to help you find the system that will best fit the needs of your business.

Pricing. The cost of installing a security camera system varies, depending on whether you choose to hire a security provider or install your own system. The do-it-yourself route will have a cost between $100 and $300 for a basic camera system. Special features and elements will increase the price. Compare hardware and software costs with the potential dollar savings from theft reduction.

Signage. Make sure to notify employees of installed cameras, their locations and their purpose. Post video surveillance notice signs throughout your facility to ensure employees, visitors and potential thieves are aware of surveillance activity.

Applications. Cameras allow you to keep an eye on your business and monitor activity, even while you’re away. Install cameras near entrances, heavy equipment and other areas that may be at risk. In case of theft, security camera footage may be used to help identify and prosecute thieves.

To give your products and equipment the best protection, Hortica® recommends combining surveillance camera use with other theft prevention systems. The unique view these cameras provide can be used to analyze where additional security can be installed to minimize theft opportunities.

Take advantage of the elevated angle and check if hedges obstruct any areas in the camera’s view. Prune large trees and hedges to avoid giving thieves coverage.

Many security camera systems include night vision; test this feature to check if additional lighting is necessary to ensure a clear and accurate picture. Motion sensors and alarms can alert you to suspicious activity. Oftentimes you can set up a system to notify a designated person of suspicious activity.
