Meilland Wins International Rose AwardSource: Conard-Pyle Co.

The well-known breeder of the Drift rose series was honored at the annual GROW event for his contributions to the industry.

Rosarian and breeder of the Drift rose series, Alain Meilland, head of Meilland International, was honored at the annual Great Rosarians of the World (GROW) event earlier this month in New York City.

“We congratulate Alain on this well-deserved recognition,” said Steve Hutton, president of the Conard-Pyle Co., Meilland International’s longtime partner in the United States, and introducer of Drift roses in the States. “Meilland International and Conard-Pyle have enjoyed a long and successful history, and we’re committed to continue to bring beautiful and top-performing roses to market.”

The GROW award is presented annually to a rosarian who has made remarkable contributions to the rose industry. As head of Meilland International, Alain Meilland has worked in this field for 50 years. He has continued to drive the six-generation, family-owned and -managed company to produce eye-catching roses. Meilland International produces outstanding varieties of roses, which include the Drift rose series and more recently the 2013 AARS winner, Francis Meilland.

A French company, Meilland International produced its most famous rose, the Peace rose, before World War II and sought to introduce it to other regions of the world. Through their close relationship with Conard-Pyle, Peace was propagated during the war and later introduced. On April 29, 1945, the day Berlin fell, the Peace rose was used in the United States to herald the end of the war. Since this partnership began, Meilland International and Conard-Pyle have worked together to successfully breed a variety of beautiful roses.
