PPA Names Plant Of The YearSource: Perennial Plant Association

The Perennial Plant Association (PPA) has named nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’ as the 2007 Perennial Plant of the Year. Catmint is the common name of this perennial, which has aromatic, silver-green foliage and dark blue-purple flowers from late spring to frost if it is pruned back by two-thirds when the initial flowers fade. ‘Walker’s Low’ is roughly 36 inches tall with a spread of approximately 30-36 inches. It is hardy from Zones 3-8 and performs best in full sun with a well-drained soil and neutral pH.

“The Perennial Plant of the Year Program is designed to help consumers select plants that perennial industry experts find to be outstanding and easily grown,” said Steven Still, executive director of the PPA. The program was initiation in 1990. Each year, members of the PPA select a perennial that is low maintenance and suitable for a wide range of climate types while also exhibiting multi-seasonal interest.
