‘Victory’ Named Hosta of the Year by AHGASource: American Hosta Growers Association

The American Hosta Growers Association announced ‘Victory’ as the 2015 Hosta of the Year.

American Hosta Growers Association (AHGA) announced ‘Victory’ as the 2015 Hosta of the Year (HOTY). AHGA selects the HOTY two to three years in advance to allow for sufficient inventory.

Mark Zilis, the registrant of the hosta, discovered ‘Victory’ in his tissue culture lab. Zilis developed a white-margined version from a single culture with a few streaks. ‘Victory’ matures on average to 38 inches in height with an 88 inch spread. Individual leaves measure 17 inches long and 13 inches across.

The following criteria are used when selecting HOTY:

  • The hosta should grow well in all parts of the country
  • The hosta should have a retail price in the year for which it is selected of approximately $15-20
  • The hosta should be distinct and recognizable
  • The hosta should be widely available in the year for which it is selected
  • All hostas, except previous winners, are eligible to be selected
