The company’s perennial roots reach back to the 1920s with John and Dena Knoll, farmers who had roots in the Netherlands.

They were growing the typical crops of a 5-acre farm in Zeeland, Michigan until Weller Nurseries hired them to grow perennials on a contract basis.

After John’s passing, Dena hired Dennis Walters to help out with the farm. He married her daughter Harriet in 1946, and Walters Gardens was established.

Main offices are still located on the same property where the company started. Walters Gardens has more than 500,000 square feet of greenhouses. Bare root makes up nearly half of perennial sales.

Walters Gardens employs more than 250 people year-round.
