Copper Amethyst and Milky Way are two new additions to the Zion osteospermum series for 2009-2010. Zion varieties have a medium to high vigor; large, colorful flowers; and good summer performance. They are best suited in medium to large pots and mixed containers.
Use one plant per 4- to 5-inch pot and two for 8-inch pots and gallons. Crop time for 5-inch pots started from a rooted cutting is nine to 12 weeks. Use a well-drained, peat moss–based substrate (add perlite for better drainage) with low salt levels and a pH of 5.8-6.2.
Start with a constant feeding program after roots have developed. Use 200- to 250-ppm nitrogen and a well-balanced fertilizer. Cool temperatures encourage branching, compact growth and flowering. After roots have developed, the optimum temperature ranges are 65-70° F days and 50-55° F nights.
Use cool morning treatments for better habit and earlier flowering. Start after side shoots have developed. Keep constantly moist, but avoid wet feet, stagnant water and overhead watering. Water in the morning so conditions are dry during the night.
