Petunia

October 13, 2009 - 23:00

‘Sophistica Antique Shades’ and ‘Sophistica Lime Bicolor’ are two new petunias that combine large blooms with unique colors. Suitable for pots, combo planters and baskets, these petunias are bred for use in a variety of decorative applications.
Use a well-drained seedling medium with a pH of 5.5-6.0 and EC about 0.75. When sowing, covering seed is not recommended. Water adequately after sowing to completely dissolve the pellet.
During final stages of growth, maintain soil temperature at 65-70° F and light levels at 2,500 foot-candles. Allow media to dry until the surface becomes light brown before watering.
Fertilize with 100- to 175-ppm nitrogen. If growth is slow, apply a balanced ammonium and nitrate-form fertilizer with every other fertilization. Maintain medium pH at 5.8-6.2 and EC at 1.0-1.5.
Control plug growth first by environment, nutrition and irrigation management, then with chemical plant growth regulators if needed.
