Phlox

December 4, 2009 - 01:00

Phloxy Lady is a new series that features strong roots, good branching, a compact and round habit, and extended flower power into the summer. Four colors are offered: Cherry Red, White, Burgundy and Pink.
For 4- to 5-inch pots, plant in early to mid-March for flowering early to mid-May. For 10-inch baskets, plant in mid- to late February for flowering in early May. Use three plants per basket. Use a well-drained, aerated, loose root medium. Maintain a pH of 5.6-5.8. It is very important to avoid overly wet root medium.
Plants should be pinched one week after potting or when plants have approximately five pairs of leaves.
Apply a complete fertilizer at 200-ppm nitrogen with a constant feed program. A chelated iron application may be needed to supply additional iron during production.
Grow in full sunlight with no shading. Low light reduces flowering and plant quality. Phlox performs best in full sun and is heat tolerant.
