In addition to the popular mix, Wonderland poppies (Papaver nudicaule) will now be available as individual colors, including Yellow, Pink Shades, White and Orange. Retailers will love the color-blocking options these varieties now offer, and landscapers will be able to depend on Wonderland poppies when looking to create massive blocks of color in beds.
The poppy Wonderland annual series features 4-inch flowers on short, strong upright stems. Known for its wind and cold tolerance, Wonderland can be shipped with pansies and other cool-weather crops. It is ideal for early spring sales in the Midwest and East and for late winter and spring sales in the West.
Wonderland poppies perform best in a sandy, rich and well-drained sterile media. Their optimum temperature is 59° F, with a preferred growing temperature of 48-50° F. This is not a high feed crop, and it will do best with a well-balanced calcium nitrate–based formulation. Optimum pH is 5.8-6.2 with an EC of 0.8-1.0.
There are no major pest concerns, although root diseases like Pythium or Phytophthora may occasionally be a problem in poorly drained soil.
