GPN and Nexus Corporation are excited to announce the 2005 GPN /Nexus Intern Scholarship winner — Scott Stiles.
Scott, a senior at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich., is unlike the previous five scholarship winners. Instead of interning at a production facility, he spent his summer learning about financing and the capital needs of horticulture at the Schoolcraft, Mich., branch of GreenStone Farm Credit Services.
“I decided at an early age that I wanted to work in greenhouse production,” Scott wrote in his application letter. “I hope you will agree that my internship at GreenStone Farm Credit Services is an extension of greenhouse production. Financial results are the ultimate measurement of any business success. My internship provided me with a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of this important aspect of greenhouse production.”
Scott’s initiative to learn all aspects of floriculture, both production and business, made him stand out from a great group of applicants. GPN’s editorial advisory board, which judges the competition, offered this conclusion: “Scott’s [experience] is very innovative…going to the financial side and learning about many other greenhouse operations as he did it.”
We are proud to name Scott Stiles winner of the 6th annual GPN /Nexus Intern Scholarship award. As the winner, he will receive a check for $3,000 to further his education, coverage in the January 2006 issue of GPN and an all expense paid trip to the OFA Short Course, compliments of GPN and Nexus. He also will also receive a free four-day registration to the OFA Short Course, compliments of OFA.
Be sure to pick up the January 2006 issue of GPN to read more about Scott’s internship experience.
