Vinca

‘Cora Apricot’ and ‘Cora Lavender’ are part of a new series of long-lasting and disease-resistant vinca. These varieties feature large flowers and thick, glossy foliage, and exhibit uniform habit and flowering time. Hardy to Zone 11, Cora varieties reach 14-16 inches tall and 22-25 inches wide. Other colors in this series are Burgundy, Violet, White and Deep Lavender.

Dark conditions are required for germination. Once cotyledons have expanded, provide light at 100-150 foot-candles. Maintain temperature at 75-78° F until day 14. Keep humidity level at 100 percent for the first 10 days or until seed coats are shed. During the vegetative period, keep pH level at 5.3-5.8 and EC level at 1.0-1.2. Supplemental lighting at 350-500 foot-candles at day nine will enhance shoot and root growth.

Growing on, provide 3,500-4,500 foot-candles to hasten flower induction. Maintain temperature at 70-74° F. Alternate between wet and dry moisture levels. Under high light conditions, apply an ammonium-based feed at 100- to 150-ppm nitrogen. Under low light conditions, apply a calcium-based feed at 100- to 150-ppm nitrogen.

It is best to control growth through moisture, feed and temperature management. If needed, apply sprays of B-Nine (daminozide) at 2,500-5,000 ppm, A-Rest (ancymidol) at 3-5 ppm or Bonzi (paclobutrazol) at 2-3 ppm.
