Purslane

June 21, 2011 - 23:00

Supreme purslane is excellent in dry conditions or water-restricted areas, and can be used in small or large pots, hanging baskets or in combinations. All 10 varieties in the Supreme series bloom all year round and have consistent growth habits.

Planting in 4-inch pots will take six to eight weeks with one cutting. Three to four cuttings in a gallon container will take eight to 10 weeks. Planting three to four cuttings in a 10- to 12-inch basket will take 10 to 12 weeks.

Maintain temperature at 65 to 75° F days and 60° F nights. Purslane prefers bright light. Keep plants on the dry side, but do not let them dry out. Maintain pH at 5.5 to 6.5. Keep EC at 2.0, and feed with a complete fertilizer at 250 ppm.

Pinch one to two weeks after transplanting. A second pinch may be needed to shape plants. Plant growth regulators are usually not needed.
