Scaevola

April 24, 2013 - 14:14

The new scaevola ‘Scampi Blue’ and ‘Scampi White’ are compact plants that are suitable in the landscape as well as mixed containers. They perform well in sun and shade.

Maintain pH of 5.5 to 6.2. Fertilize with 200- to 250-ppm nitrogen using a balanced feed to maintain color of foliage. Nitrate formulations are superior to ammonium formulated mixes in keeping vegetative growth to a minimum.

Allow soil to dry between irrigations for best performance in containers or in the garden. Yellowing may occur if soil is constantly wet.

Recommended temperature is 55 to 65° F nights and 65 to 75° F days. Scaevola flourish in warm conditions and are drought tolerant. Maintain high to medium-high light levels — 4,000 to 8,000 foot-candles. Low light levels may create elongated stems and poor flowering.

A soft pinch once the plants are well established is important to create a well-branched plant early. A second pinch will help maintain quality plants during long growing cycles.
Pests to watch for include thrips, spider mites, aphids and white fly. Preventative drenches and/or sprays against Botrytis, Rhizoctonia and Pythium are recommended for this crop.
