Shinoda Foundation Awards Floral Design Scholarships

June 25, 2010 - 12:29

The Joseph Shinoda Memorial Scholarship Foundation recently announced the winners of the first-ever Shinoda Design Center Scholarship and the Jimmy Shinoda Memorial Scholarship for excellence in floral design for California community college students.

The scholarship is designed to support floral design students in the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties.

"My family and I realize the future of the industry lies within our ability to properly present and display the product,” said James Kusuda, a fifth-generation Shinoda family member and vice president of the Shinoda Design Center, one of the largest in-stock wholesale floral supply companies in the United States. “We need floral designers properly trained, and these awards support that effort.”

“The Shinoda family would like to thank everyone who contributed in my grandfather’s name to the Foundation,” said Kusuda. “That enabled us to establish this award honoring my grandfather’s many contributions to the industry.”

Two students were awarded the first Shinoda Design Center Scholarships of $1,000 each: Suzanne Carr, a sophomore at MiraCosta College in North San Diego County; and Deborah Fehlberg, a sophomore at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon.

Christina Saavedra, a sophomore at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, received the Jimmy Shinoda Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.

The foundation also recently awarded its 2010-11 general scholarships, which we reported on in a past issue of GPN Weekly. For more information on these scholarships, visit www.shinodascholarship.org.
