In a readers’ contest this fall, the Cool Wave Pansy team and Southern Living magazine collaborated to name the newest color in the Cool Wave trailing pansy portfolio.

The new name, ‘Sunshine ‘N Wine’, was submitted by a Southern Living reader and will debut at California Spring Trials, and be available to consumers in fall 2014.

In late September, Southern Living gardening editor Steve Bender announced Evelyn Scott of Savannah, Georgia, as the contest winner, and shared the new pansy name with his blog readers.

For submitting the award-winning name Ms. Scott received:

  • A grand prize package of gardening tools and accessories
  • Cool Wave gardening gear
  • An autographed picture of the “Grumpy Gardener”
  • Live plant samples of new Cool Wave Pansy ‘Sunshine ’N Wine’ for her garden this fall

As part of the collaboration, Southern Living will help promote the newly-named Cool Wave Pansy ‘Sunshine ’N Wine’ both this year and next during the fall months.

“Involving Southern Living readers for the new Cool Wave Pansy name was rewarding, both for our team and for the thousands of home gardeners who rely on pansies for their cool- season color,” says Claire Watson, brand manager for Cool Wave Pansies. “We feel the excitement around the Southern Living contest and the addition of this new color into the Cool Wave portfolio will continue to build demand for the plants at retail, bringing further engagement with the Cool Wave brand.”

Seed will be available to growers in May 2014 for retail sales in fall 2014.
