What’s Next?

In case you hadn’t noticed, GPN turned 25 years old this year. For the past quarter of a century, GPN has been providing our readers with the must-have information they need to grow healthy and profitable plants.

We’ve been celebrating this birthday throughout the year with a five-part series, Celebrating the Past, Present and Future, as well as a special section in this issue (see page 12).

In the five-part series, we asked some of our friends to take a look back at where the horticulture industry has been AND take a look forward to tell us where we might be headed.

It’s been very interesting to get their different perspectives on how the industry has evolved and continues to change. If you missed any part of the series, be sure to check out our article archives (July through November), on www.gpnmag.com

The Next 25?

Whenever you hit one of those “big” birthdays, it’s always fun to take a look back at the year you were born to see how far we have come over the years. Here are just a few of the cultural and technological milestones that occurred in 1990 — the year GPN debuted:

• Tim Berners-Lee formalized his proposal for the World Wide Web and the first web page was written.
• Microsoft released Windows 3.0.
• Apple introduced its first sub-$1,000 computer — the Macintosh Classic.
• The first episode of The Simpsons debuted on the fledgling Fox network.
• The Space Shuttle Discovery placed the Hubble Space Telescope in outer space.
• For the first time ever, the Dow Jones Industrial average broke the 2,800 barrier.

Other than The Simpsons premiere, could you imagine what life would be like nowadays without any of those other things happening? The evolution of the personal computer and the Web have changed the way we live and do business, the Hubble Telescope continues to deliver detailed information to us from 340 miles above the Earth’s surface. And, the economy continues to grow, even when it seems like we are on a roller coaster some days.

I wish I knew for certain what the milestones of 2015 are that we will be looking at in 2040? I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned.

Now’s the Time to Nominate

I wanted to remind you that we are currently accepting nominations for the Class of 2016 of GPN’s 40 Under 40.

If you know a young rock in our industry that you think should be a member of next year’s class, then we want to know about that person. To nominate that individual, just go to www.gpnmag.com and click on the Awards button in the upper right hand corner.
