The American Garden Award has just closed voting for the 2011 voting season and it was an exciting race! The weather in almost all areas of the country was challenging, but the AGA display gardens did a wonderful job of making the seven entries look their best all season long. All gardens planted the entries between April and June, then voting began on May 13. Because most of the gardens looked great at the end of August, voting was extended through the end of September. The votes have been tallied for the final time and the three winners are:

First place: ‘SunPatiens Variegated Spreading White’. Finally an impatiens for the sun. Surprisingly, it also performs well in shady and cool climates, surviving until the first hard frost, making it a three-season favorite. The large white flowers and striking variegated foliage make it an ideal plant for the “night garden.

Second place: Dahlia ‘Dahlinova Hypnotica Lavender’. This is a beautifully strong plant with an amazing flower color. It flowers over and over again. In a partial sun environment, ‘Dahlinova Hypnotica Lavender’ will offer beauty all summer long.

Third place: Petunia ‘Easy Wave Neon Rose’. This petunia can be grown in sunny containers, landscape beds, or just about any place where a bold impression is desired. These fast-growing and spreading petunias bloom continuously all season without cutting or dead-heading, and tolerate both hot and cool conditions extremely well.
