Cultivate’17 Offers New Program for Emerging Professionals By Tim Hodson

This year at Cultivate’17, AmericanHort is introducing a new program for emerging professionals in our industry.

CareerUP is a one-day program that is tailored to the unique needs and situations of young horticulture professionals. The goal of CareerUP is to provide attendees with professional development and insight that can lead to better work performance, stronger confidence and work satisfaction, higher retention rates and movement up the career ladder.

It will take place during Cultivate’17 — Saturday, July 15, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.

CareerUP is a full-day program that AmericanHort is calling a “Workshop + Inspiration Series.” It is designed to provide attendees with “honest conversations, sincere networking with other young professionals in the industry, and plenty of inspiration to motivate and empower you to keep growing strong.”

During the morning session, there will be a High Stakes Communication Workshop led by Nancy Fisher. She will discuss ways for young professionals to communicate effectively and powerfully in any situation. Fisher will walk attendees through the basics of effective communication and then actually put them into practice. It begins at 10 a.m.

The Inspiration Series will take place during the afternoon (1 to 4 p.m.). The series is made up of TED-talks style sessions that will highlight four stories from horticulture trailblazers who have faced challenges common to young professionals and gone on to build a career they love.

The presenters for these talks include: Bridget Behe, Michigan State University; Kelly Norris, Des Moines Botanical Center; Steve Black, Raemelton Farm; and “Farmer Tyler” Baras, Dallas Grown.

Lunch will be provided to all registrants as well as a Happy Hour networking reception at the end of the day.

The registration fee is $125. Attendees must register to attend Cultivate’17 and then select “CareerUP” as an add-on experience.

If you are a young professional or if you have emerging professionals that work for you, this is an event you just might want to check out.
