Ball Horticultural Co., through its new Burpee Home Gardens brand, and All Church Home for Children (ACH) honored National Child Abuse Prevention Month and National Garden Month by planting a community garden in Fort Worth, Texas. The April 4 event was part of ACH’s Easter Family Fun Day.

More than 200 people helped plant the vegetable and herb garden, which will provide healthy, homegrown foods for children and youth at ACH’s Wedgwood Campus. Fort Worth Councilman Jungus Jordan, ACH’s CEO Wayne Carson and Burpee Home Gardens brand manager Jessie Atchison spoke to the families in attendance and commemorated the community garden with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The community garden will help the children at All Church Home live healthy, nutritional lives while providing them with the opportunity to learn about vegetable gardening,” said Carson.

The event helped raise awareness of the organization as well as the economic and health benefits of planting and harvesting your own vegetables and herbs, said Atchison.

The ACH Wedgwood Campus is home to the Wedgwood Residential Program, offering safe, stable and nurturing homes for children and youth, from ages 4 to 18. The program provides basic and therapeutic services for 28 children in a family-like neighborhood.

Burpee Home Gardens is a new program of garden-ready vegetable and herb plants available in more than 400 stores in 2009. The program, available from Ball, is being nationally introduced for the 2010 season.
