The Flower Garden, a fresh flower grower located in St. Anne, Ill., has chosen the MPS-ABC environmental certification program. The Flower Garden grows more than 75 varieties of flowers on outdoor fields, and grows hybrid lilies and starter plants in their greenhouses. The Flower Garden markets their bouquets and bunches of fresh flowers through various farmers’ markets in Illinois.

General Manager Jim Barmann notes that getting the MPS-ABC environmental certification helps them understand how they can improve their sustainability each year. Every four weeks he enters their use of energy, water, fertilizers and crop protection agents into the MPS website. Four times a year he receives feedback from MPS in the form of charts, graphs and a report. Once they have completed their first year and the audit, they will receive their official MPS score that will designate them as MPS-A, MPS-B or MPS-C.

“Our customers are happy to learn that we are working with an international certification program to help us learn how we can improve our practices and become even more sustainable,” said Barmann. “Many of the farm market shoppers care that we are concerned about growing flowers sustainably and that we care about our environment.”
