Growers Make it a Big Week for SustainabilitySource: VeriFlora

Floral Plant Growers Recognized With VeriFlora Certification

Floral Plant Growers, LLC, one of GPN‘s 2008 Sustainability Progress Awards winners, has earned VeriFlora certification for its commitment to sustainable horticulture practices at all three of its three greenhouse locations: Denmark, Wis.; Richmond, Ind.; and Boyden, Iowa.

Its Denmark location was certified back in 2008, the first open-market plug and liner producer to achieve the certification.

“Attaining VeriFlora sustainability certification is the right thing for our customers, employees, community, and owners. Being one of the first young and potted plant producers to complete this rigorous program demonstrates FPG’s commitment not only to the present, but also the future,” said Scott Lueder, president and CEO.

Eagle Creek Moves Forward With its Sustainability Commitment

Eagle Creek Growers recently took the next step in journey toward sustainability by earning VeriFlora certification. Last April, GPN covered the grower’s installation of a 50-kilowatt wind turbine and detailed its plans for further installation of more energy-saving equipment and facilities.

“This was a natural next step for us in our continuing commitment to sustainability,” said owner Jill Cain. “I believe it adds value not only for our wholesale accounts but also the end consumer. VeriFlora provides us an independent, third-party certification that consumers can trust.”

In order to earn VeriFlora certification, growers must meet leading edge environmental protection requirements covering issues such as pest management, media fertility, production yields, energy efficiency, carbon footprint, integrated waste management, water conservation and ecosystem protection. The program provides stringent sustainability performance standards addressing product quality; environmental accountability; and the health and well-being of workers, their families and communities.
