Pleasant View Gardens Introduces Perennial Collection
One of our biggest accomplishments this year is introducing more than 90 new perennial varieties, in addition to our already-popular lines, notes Henry Huntington, president of PVG. “Each of the new varieties in our collection is already vernalized to ensure great performance and blooming power the very first year.”
Three of the new varieties that PVG is particularly excited to mention are the following because of their cold tolerance that adds to early spring sales and their great container and landscape performance.
- Geranium ‘Jolly Bee’ (Proven Winners) stands out with its constant display of deep blue flowers from May through October. Its mounding and compact habit makes it a nice choice for the garden and mixed containers. Plus it is a butterfly attractor according to PVG.
- Oenothera ‘Lemon Drop’ (Proven Winners) is the award winner among the new introductions, holding the “Editor’s Choice Award” from Country Living Gardener magazine. This new evening primrose is covered with vibrant lemon yellow flowers all summer, even when the temperatures get hot, according to PVG.
- Viola ‘Columbine’ (Proven Selections) is a great performer with purple and white marbled flowers that appear from early spring until late fall. It flowers non-stop in areas with moderate summers, especially if given a spot in partial to full shade. With its 3-inch stems, it makes a good addition to mini-bouquets and containers, according to PVG.
Other highlights from PVG’s perennial collection include three varieties of Star dianthus from breeder John Whetman, Perennial Plant of the Year winner coreopsis ‘Moonbeam’, the Country Living Gardener Editor’s Choice selection penstemon ‘Lilliput Rose’, and 10 of breeder Dan Heims’ best heuchera and heucherella varieties, to name just a few.
