No Time Like the Present By Tim Hodson

Now that 2011 has officially arrived, what are you going to do this month?

What are you and your employees doing during this "down time?"

While things may be a little slower in your greenhouses right now (there's always plenty to do), this is the perfect time to take stock of your company's knowledge base and fill in some of the gaps.

Take inventory of not only what you know, but what your employees know also. Then decide what you and your business need to know this year. Then act on it!

There are quite a few regional trade shows and conferences taking place in January and February where you can stock up on educational opportunities as well as new vendors. These conferences are the perfect place to enhance what you already know and cultivate new ideas that will help your business grow and be more successful in 2011.

Some of the places you'll find the GPN staff at this month include Mid-Am in Chicago, TPIE in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., MANTS in Baltimore, ANLA Management Clinic in Louisville, Ky. — just to name a few.

Even though Old Man Winter is still flexing his muscles around the country, now is the time to invest in your business' continuing education — it is an investment that will pay off!

One to Watch For

In this month's cover story, Jasmina Radjevic profiles Amy Hinkle — the 2011 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year.

Amy is a junior at Penn State University majoring in Horticulture Science. Last year she completed an in-depth 12-week internship at Bear Creek Farms in Stillwater, Okla.

For her efforts, Amy will receive a $3,000 check from Nexus Corp., a trip to Columbus this July for OFA Short Course as well as a full-registration to Short Course (compliments of OFA).

As you will read in Jasmina's article, Amy is someone to keep an eye on in the coming years. And just so you know, she graduates from PSU in the spring of 2012.
