Now That’s a Vertical Garden! By Tim Hodson

One of the biggest trends in home gardening in recent years has been vertical gardening.

Well one gardener in the United Kingdom has taken vertical gardening to new heights – 26 feet to be specific!

A recent article from the BBC tells the tale of Edward Hayes, a 71-year-old retired steelworker in Newport, England.

Using leftover steel struts from old office desks and working all by himself, Hayes spent three months welding together six box sections that were then stacked on top of each other and tethered to a wall for support.

After he completed the tower, Hayes planted up 128 large containers with daffodils and tulips. Once they died out, Hayes replanted all of the containers with geraniums, pansies, fucshias and other colorful varieties. He spends about three hours twice a week tending to the plants in his creation.

And if Hayes would have had his wish, the tower would have been even taller. His original plan was to build a 40-foot tower, but his wife made him stop at 26 feet.

You can see a brief video and photo of Hayes’ creation by clicking here.
