Shinoda Scholarship Applications
Applications and information regarding the 2006-2007 Shinoda Memorial Scholarships for college students planning careers in floriculture and related fields are now available online for download at http://www.shinodascholarship.org. Hard copies of the Shinoda Scholarship applications will be available in academic horticulture departments in mid-January.
To be considered for these awards, students must complete and return the Shinoda scholarship applications by March 30, 2006. Winners are announced by the Joseph Shinoda Memorial Scholarship Foundation later in the spring. Those receiving scholarships must be planning careers in floriculture and enrolled in their sophomore, junior or senior year of study in floriculture or related fields at accredited 4-year colleges and universities in the United States.

The foundation, formed under the auspices of the California State Florists’ Association in 1964, has selected recipients for its scholarships and grants for more than 40 years. Winners of the scholarships, named in honor of a highly regarded pioneer of California’s floral industry, have gone on to become leaders in the many aspects of floriculture. Among the former beneficiaries of Shinoda scholarships are Andy Higgins, president of Ecke Ranch, Encinitas, Calif.; Susanne Koch Snyder, president of Koch California Ltd., Nipomo, Calif.; and Royal D. Heins, horticulture professor emeritus at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich.
Incorporated as a separate entity in 1972, the foundation has assisted 579 students with a total of $644,000 since Richard Tsukushi of Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif., and George Field of University of California, Davis, Calif., received the first Shinoda Scholarships in 1965.
