Spring Trials Sneak Peek – Vol. 2

The countdown to the 2013 California Spring Trials continues with only 38 days until the week-long event begins!

In my last newsletter, I shared some of the new varieties that will be introduced at this year’s Spring Trials. And today I wanted to share even more with you. The breeders that will be exhibiting along the California coast this April were kind enough to share a glimpse into their most recent breeding efforts. Here’s a sneak preview into what will be on display at the trials.

Keep in mind, this is only a handful of this year’s new introductions. Be on the lookout for my next newsletter where I’ll share more new varieties with you.

Petunia Kermit (Westflowers)

Kermit is a new collection of petunias from the breeder of Crazytunias. Kermits are grower and consumer friendly with pink/rose flowers highlighted by a striking green edge. Three colors are currently part of the series: Baby (pictured), Piggy and Rose.

Calibrachoa Cruze (Green Fuse Botanicals)

The Cruze series features seven colors (Violet is pictured) with large, abundant flowers on mounded plants. Cruze varieties will fill a basket and make great combination plantings. They are selected to be early flowering and to produce plants with naturally shortened internodes.

Bacopa ‘Boutique Pink Mascara’ (Hort Couture)

The third color to round out the Boutique collection, Pink Mascara joins Tye-Dye White and Blue. It is extremely heat tolerant and exhibits large flower size and constant summer color. Bacopa Boutique has been a top-performing bacopa in the South.

Salvia ‘Curling Waves’ (Hishtil Nurseries)

Salvia ‘Curling Waves’ is an attractive, rich flowering, compact plant. The bicolor (blue and white) flowers decorate the plant throughout summer. It boasts good drought tolerance combined with a long flowering window.

Pericallis ToDaisy (Pacific Plug & Liner)

ToDaisy will add early season color to the indoors and outdoors. The series has a round habit and extraordinary branching. The cultivation over the winter months is an ideal transitional product between the winter and spring season.

Geranium Angels Perfume (Elsner PAC)

The famous East German geranium breeder is introducing this highly floriferous scented geranium with an abundance of medium-sized vibrant flowers. Foliage is lemon scented like a citronella geranium.

What do you think of these new varieties? What traits do you look for in new genetics? Shoot me an e-mail anytime at jdolce@greatamericanpublish.com. I’d love to hear from you.
